Born of the highlands

Secret Iceland was founded by brothers Trausti and Guðmann Ísleifsson, born in Vík í Mýrdal, who spent many childhood summers on their aunt's farm, Efri-Vík, at Kirkjubæjarklaustur.

Sheep, farmers and a road

As young teens the brothers rode into the Lakagígar area with local farmers, who have long grazed their sheep in the highlands, and helped bring the flocks down. Their father, Ísleifur Guðmannsson, and uncle, Reynir Ragnarsson, built the road to Lakagígar around 1963–64 so the farmers could gather sheep from the mountains more easily. The road is now maintained by the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration — but it remains rough and impassable for smaller vehicles.

From road building to eruptions

In 1992 the brothers started a road construction business for the City of Reykjavík that grew to over 35 people. When construction stopped after the 2008 financial crisis, a small eruption began at Fimmvörðuháls on 20 March 2010 — and they started taking visitors there in their modified Super Jeep. Later that year they launched guided tours to Lakagígar, a place they had known since childhood.

Licensed since 2010

Secret Iceland has been a licensed tour operator, authorised by the Icelandic Tourist Board, since 2010. Our guides are experienced, certified locals with decades of travel in the Icelandic highlands by Super Jeep, summer and winter.

Today

Secret Iceland is now run by Davíð, its new owner and guide, continuing the same small-group Super Jeep day tours from Kirkjubæjarklaustur.

“We started our day trip to Lakagígar in 2010 to give people the opportunity to be guided by locals and travel in a specially modified super jeep to get the most out of the day with maximum comfort.”
